Study Day at Campus De Nayer
On Tuesday 9 May, Monument Goedleven organised its traditional study day for civil engineering students from KU Leuven, Campus De Nayer in Sint-Katelijne-Waver. After previous editions in Mechelen (Predikheren Monastery / Beguinage Church) and Antwerp (City Hall / Belfry Tower), this time the focus was on Mortsel City Hall and the St. James’s Church in Antwerp.
After a short welcome in Mortsel, an academic session followed with several speakers: the architect spoke about his design and material choices, the technical engineer explained gas-free building heating, MRT presented on concrete repair and bonded reinforcement. Afterwards, the students went on a guided site tour — from basement to attic (without roof), they were immersed in the fascinating world of city hall renovation.
After lunch, the group moved to Antwerp for the second part of the day, which again started with theory. Our own staff explained the specific site layout, the architect introduced the design phase, the safety coordinator focused on key risks, the structural engineer walked everyone through timber structure calculations, while MSC covered scaffolding design. Rewah concluded the session with a talk on epoxy repairs in restoration.
Following a short break, the students were given a guided tour of the site: through the bell tower, the nave, the storage box, and even the crypt of Rubens. The already restored west side was expertly presented by Altritempi.
Thanks again to everyone for their effort and collaboration in making this educational day a success!
