Monuversity Welcomes VTI Izegem to the Carpentry Workshop
At Group Monument, we invest heavily in training craftsmen in restoration and renovation. To support this, we recently founded our own Monuversity — a platform that offers learning opportunities for our own employees, as well as students and future team members, to gain knowledge about our traditional crafts.
On Tuesday 5 March, the students from the 7th year of “Special Carpentry Structures” at VTI Izegem were given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in our carpentry workshop. It was an engaging day where students could turn theory into practical skills.
We met in the center of Tournai, at the Carré Janson site, where our carpentry workshop produced all the windows. These impressive wooden structures are well worth seeing. The students were able to view the restored windows — crafted by our skilled carpenters — directly on site.
In the afternoon, the students were welcomed at the workshop by Bart Vanderheeren and Simon Wastyn, two former VTI Izegem students. There, they had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with new machines.
Our own passionate craftsmen guided the students step by step:
– Bart and Simon taught them how to make a traditional mortise and tenon joint.
– Bruno, Xavier, and Sebastiaan instructed them in marking, sawing, and installing rafters on an existing roof structure.
This practical session not only offered valuable hands-on experience, but also encouraged creativity and problem-solving.
The visit to our workshop was both educational and inspiring for these future professionals. It highlighted the importance of practical training in real work environments and the value of sharing expertise between seasoned professionals and emerging talent.
We ended the day with a sense of satisfaction and motivation — the students returned to VTI Izegem full of new insights and experience, ready to further develop their carpentry skills.
Special thanks to our carpenters Bart, Simon, Bruno, Xavier, and Sebastiaan for their inspiring guidance!
