The next phase of the restoration of the Provinciaal Hof in Bruges has started: interior restoration and renovation. Interior works are scheduled to continue until early 2024, after which the Provinciaal Hof will reopen its doors.

Exterior Works
The exterior restoration began in October 2020. Earlier this year, the works were completed and the building’s façade shines brighter than ever.

Interior Works
Architectural firm Van Severen is responsible for all heritage-related aspects required due to the reorganisation, while FELT is in charge of the new interior layout.
The contractor is Monument-Vandekerckhove. Structural engineer Stefan Lauwaert is responsible for stability, and Boydens Engineering (part of Sweco) for technical systems. Feys has been appointed as safety coordinator.
The interior restoration has a budget of €4,982,646.35, excluding VAT.

New Purpose
The Province has drawn up plans to prepare the building both functionally and structurally for its new role. These plans were developed in consultation with various advisory bodies and partners, including: Onroerend Erfgoed Vlaanderen/Bruges, the fire brigade, Inter, the City of Bruges, Westtoer, and Visit Flanders.
A key aspect is improving accessibility, which was broadly addressed for visitors, staff, and suppliers. Three new fully functional elevators will improve access and flow within the building:

  • One lift will bridge the level difference between the Market Square and the ground floor.
  • The second will connect all floors from the basement to the second floor.
  • The third will be located in the service wing and facilitate catering and materials for activities.

The architectural integration of these lifts is complex and will be executed with respect for the authentic interiors.

Fire Safety and Sustainability
Fire safety is being thoroughly addressed, including new compartmentalisation and an evacuation route.

In anticipation of the city of Bruges’ future heat network, the Province is also implementing several sustainable and energy-saving measures:

  • Conversion of the central heating system to low-temperature heating with integrated underfloor heating and insulation.
  • Restoration and energy-efficient relighting of chandeliers and wall fixtures — including two 15-metre wrought iron chandeliers weighing 1,500 kg each.
  • Painting based on historic colour research and restoration of furniture.
  • Installation of two new sanitary blocks and a furniture storage area in the attic.

Provinciaal Hof: An Open House with Multiple Functions
For over 125 years, the Provinciaal Hof has been the face of the provincial government. Since 2018, the Province of West Flanders has been the owner. Their goal is to turn the historic building on Bruges' Market Square into an open house for all West Flemish people and visitors from beyond.
They are committed to fully restoring the building into a ‘House of the West Fleming’, where inspiration will be central. Visitors will be able to enjoy various activities. There will also be meeting and conference spaces, as well as guided and self-guided tours.

The Curator
Actor Wim Opbrouck was elected Ambassador of West Flanders in 2020. He has now been appointed by the Province as curator for the opening year of the renewed Provinciaal Hof. Preparations have already begun. Through a participatory process, he will help shape a strong narrative for the reopening with and for the people of West Flanders.

Site Zone Information
A site information area is set up at the Provinciaal Hof. Spanning 52 metres, it provides details about the restoration works, the building’s history, and its future. Some sections will be updated throughout the works with current information about each construction phase or event.
